about

After years of talk talk talking about the difference between music for the dancefloor vs. music for the home, Stewart Walker was still making dancetracks which essentially fit into the genre of minimal techno. Some atmospheric pieces still popped up occasionally as heard on the “M.O.R. Of the Same” 12” but these tracks were always hiding behind the more powerful dj-oriented tracks. It had been a long time since Stewart dedicated himself to writing a full album dedicated for the home listening environment. So “Grounded in Existence” is probably the thematic successor to 1999's critically acclaimed “Stabiles” album on Force Inc.

“Stabiles” was somehow ahead of its time because of its usage of steady techno bass pulses for the home environment. It's minimal and organic orchestration inspired the now-huge genre of simple but effective bass and reverb nod-a-thons. But truthfully, this music was simply a logical progression from Stewart's influences of Basic Channel and Mike Ink's “Studio 1” series.

When he began “Grounded in Existence” he had spent much more time listening to hip-hop and indie rock than techno 12”s, and he wished to reshape those influences into an electronic format where he felt he could make an original sound out of the genre- mixing. In addition to this, he aimed to bring back strong melodies and harmonies into his music. Also, it was important to align these new tonalities into a more traditional song structure so that each track has multiple instances of quiet and intensity.

Let's talk about “post-Techno” but try not to take ourselves too seriously. For Stewart and many other like-minded producers, the 90's was the techno-decade. The birth of raves, the Internet and economic prosperity in America gave Gen-X'ers a feeling of revolution; that they were smarter than their parents, and capable of building a new economic model for the future. With the new millennium however, all of these dreams successively died. And now we have to wake up in the morning, and remodel ourselves to function in this new era.

This new foundation is our grounding. Our life is our canvas and when it becomes impossible to fantasize about potential realities, we've got to scrape down the dream residue and return to the nuts and bolts of existence – analyze the past, and plan for the future. But keep on doing what you're doing.
