After years of trying to reconcile the separate experiences of the “listening techno” he has released on Persona and Force Inc. and the pounding 4/4 jack-trax of his world-renowned live performances Stewart Walker has finally managed to merge both worlds to his satisfaction.

“Live Extracts” is the result of taking the exclusive and never before released sounds from his live show and re-orchestrating them with the full control offered by a home studio. So now when concert-goers ask him “can I get that track on vinyl?” Stewart can answer, “Yeah! Kinda,” because the energy is there, the sounds are there, but these are whole songs, not just loops.

Even within the context of a live mix, Stewart still manages to provide a broad range of styles. Good techno DJs play for those with short attention spans who want change and dynamics every 30 seconds. Stewart recognizes this and here he combines the fast mixing style of a good DJ with his love of music that develops internally. Represented here is a fine balance between the heavily orchestrated and the quickly mixed.

This CD provides loads of variety as well. From the hard minimal of “Torso” to the broken beats of “Click to Next Frame” to the lush orchestral house of “Red Sun Over Tobin Bridge.” Sometimes you feel like stretching the boundaries of synthesis and sometimes you just want to have fun. For those who still enjoy pumping their fist in their car this disc is for you.

Available mixed on CD and separated on DJ-friendly vinyl.
